Mandalay **

Rainbow salad - good though I prefer the one at Pagan.
Mo Hing Ga - better than all the other one's I've had around town.
Lamb Curry - not bad, but not something to order again. Somewhat standard curry.
Balatha - palata appetizer - o.k., but I didn't love the sauce, again prefer the one at Pagan.
Tan Poi Rice - saffron rice with some veggies and raisins mixed in. O.k. had a bit too much cinamon flavor for my tastes and I did not thing that the addition of frozen peas and diced carrots added anything to the rice.
Overall o.k. would eat here again, but likely order completely different set of dishes.

BURMESE KITCHEN*

Burmese Kitchen formerly Larkin Express Deli remodeled and a more extensive menu of Burmese items.

Mohinga - fish chowder with rice noodles, good balance between the salt, spice and the rice noodles. Ordered with extra fried lentils: good.

Rainbow Salad - noodles were a bit sticky. Other than that the texture was good, but flavors were fine. Prefer the spicier more acidic version at Pagan.

Lunch combo is a good deal, big bowl of soup and a small portion of tea leaf salad.

PAGAN**

Burmese

Moo Hin Nga (Cat Fish Noodle Soup) - Fish chowder with rice noodle, ground catfish, onion, garlic, and cilantro - better than Larkin Express.
Chin Hin Yee (Burmese Hot and Sour Soup) - too sour and one dimensional.
Tea Leaf Salad (Lap Pat Thut) - o.k.
Rainbow Salad (Lat Thut Song) - great balance of ingredients, tasty dressing, fresh and light.
Chin Mong Jaw with Shrimp - Burmese style sour vegetables sauteed with green chili, prawn, and bamboo shoots - unique sour flavor remind me of a particular collard green preparation.

Spicy Eggpant with Dried Shrimp
Traditional Shrimp Biriyani Rice
Burmese Style Curry Lamb
Burmese Style Curry Chicken - more flavorful than the lamb, but not notable.
Burmese Style Fish Cake Curry - fish cakes were salty, but curry was fine.

Nan Pia Dok (Flat Noodles Chicken Curry) - good noodles, cooked perfectly blended well with the curry.
See Jyet Kaukswer (Pork) - simple noodles with a bit of fried pork and a little kick at the end.
Palata - excellent.

Get again:
Rainbow Salad, Nia Pia Dok, Palata, also good: Moo Hinga Soup. Next time try another soup and a tofu dish.

LARKIN EXPRESS DELI **

I was excited when I happened to be in the neighborhood of Larkin Express Deli with an hour to spare. Upon perusing the menu of Burmese fare, I settled on trying the Mohinga which has been discussed several times on the local food boards. Mohinga is a fish soup with a curry base and rice noodles. This one was topped with some crisped lentils that made a cracker on top of the soup. The soup was thickened with minced fish meat, not chunks as I had been expecting. It had a strong slightly salty curry flavor with a nice acidic kick of lime at the end -- add the crunchiness of the lentil cracker and I was happy. The only drawback was the large portion of rice noodles which were overcooked and soggy. I've always had a strong aversion to overcooked noodles or pasta. The noodles overwhelmed the soup so much that I had to take half of them out of the bowl which left about a half cup of soup. To his credit and my surprise, the friendly server noticed and brought an extra bowl of soup without noodles. I would order this again without the noodles. I appreciated that the establishment seemed to care a lot about whether I enjoyed the food. I will definitely return and would order this again without the noodles. Though there are several other Burmese items I'll sample next time.

BURMA SUPERSTAR**

Lunch at Burma Super Star with EC on a Tuesday. EC has been to Burma so it was interesting to get her take on this place.

Starters: Samusa Soup, this soup is
ok. It is so thick and concentrated that it is really more like a curry. The flavors are good, but I felt like I should be dipping a roti or having it over rice rather than drinking it as a soup. I think that the many pieces of falafel and beans and other chunks are meant to cut the concentration, but it didn't quite do it. E said that the soups in Burma are quite thick, so this is the right style, but not for me. Neither of us would get this again. Rainbow Salad, a noodle salad with many ingredients including dried shrimp flakes and a tamarind dressing that added the right brightness to the salad, this might be my favorite of the meal.

Entrees: Chicken Dahl was very good. The chicken was tender and fell off the bone into a well balanced curry liquid dotted with yellow lentils very flavorful, not hot spicy. Beef KabatPea Shoots was a tender spinach-like green
recommended by the server was a stir fried beef that was red and spicy. The meat was perfectly seasoned and soft. I ate this for lunch the next day and it was just as delicious. This is a must-order. sauteed with garlic. The produce was very fresh and cooked well, retaining its bright green color and crunch with just the right amount of garlic. We also had Coconut Rice to accompany our dishes which had a coconut scent though very lightly flavored, was the right thing to accompany the curry and spicy kebat.

Drinks: E ordered the coconut drink which is a coconut with a hole punched in it, once she finished the drink she had them open up the coconut so she could dig out the young meat. I had the ginger
lemonade which was very refreshing and not overly gingery.

Things to Try Next Time: Burmese
Samusas, Coconut Curry Flat Flour Noodles, Tan Poi, Tea Leaf Salad; Larkin Express Deli which is reputed to have more home style Burmese cooking.
